The garden suggests there might be a place where we can meet nature halfway ~ Michael Pollan
Mother nature delivered a fierce storm this past Saturday, my container garden took a direct hit. She toppled over my five-gallon buckets of tomatoes like they were matchsticks and snapped one of the zucchini plants off at the base. The maters survived their topsy turvy ride across the roof, and I was able to salvage the zucchinis from the plant. Funny thing the small pots of flowers and herbs had no damage, guess because they are lower to the ground and protected by the larger containers. Wanting to enjoy the freshness of my first homegrown zucchinis, I chopped them up and made a salad. I wasn't disappointed, the zucchinis were awesome, I nibbled on the smaller ones while making the salad.

So sorry about your mishap. I'm glad the tomatoes survived the storm but too bad about the one zucchini. Do you have other squash plants that made it through OK?
Vegetable gardening is always an adventure, isn't it? You never know what to expect. Our biggest problem weather-wise here in the Sacramento area has been the lack of heat. We've only had about two weeks of our usual super hot weather so our vegetables are taking a long time to get growing.
Sue the larger zucchini plant survived, and has lots of babies, so I will still have zucchinis. The maters had a few broken branches, but otherwise held up fine. We get strong summer storms here, but nothing like south of us got, they had tornados!
Speaking of Sacramento, we just saw on the news about a bear that broke into a home ? Yikes!
Heartbreaking when Mother Nature turns vicious, which inevitably happens, either wind, hail, drought or other vagaries of weather.
The zuchinni salad looks scrumptious. My neighbor who grows zuchinni brought some here that I could have used for clubs. I tossed one into the field that was too old to eat. Buffie retrieved it and used it for a toy until after it rotted. Ewwww!
Nell I will count my blessings, I only lost a plant .. south of us the storm was much worse and some people lost their homes. Puts things in perspective doesn't it?
Maybe some of the seeds will take root in the field, and Buffie will have more toys later on :)
Can't mess with mother nature!!!! Glad it didn't do much damage and you were able to salvage the zucchini. Can't let that go to waste!
Wow that Zucchini looks delish all by itself or in the salad. :) Glad the damage wasn't worse.
LOL Theresa, no way was I gonna let that happen :)
Thanks Racquel, I am looking forward to more from my one remaining plant :)
Mother Nature.... what a temptress she can be!
Luckily damage is minimal, and hoping that's all the damage you'll experience. BTW, that zucchini looks wonderful!
yep, i know all about stinkin' weather abuse. i'm glad it wasn't any worse.
meanwhile, i'm loving that behemoth of a zuke and what you did with it. good stuff.
Thanks Lucy .. I have seeds left from what you sent me. The smaller zucchini plant took the hit, the large one is doing fine.
Thanks Grace :)
Gardening is a humbling endeavor, that's for sure.
But it looks like you salvaged some goodies and made a brilliant zucchini salad - delicious!
Sorry about your garden...you sure have a big zucchini. Very interesting!
I know about those summer storms. looks like you really did well with not wasting what you had - really looks scrumptious. Love zucchini every which way.
Musta been quite a storm! But at least, that kind of damage you can EAT. That's not true with all storms. My zucchinis are still a twinkle in their dad's eyes.
Barbara .. humbling indeed, we can do everything right and still lose plants.
Thanks Julianna :)
Me too Claudia, and I am going to enjoy every one :)
Elenka .. it was one of those micro burst, tore some awnings off the restaurants up the street.
