Undercover

One of the most delightful things about a garden is the anticipation it provides. ~W.E. Johns

I enjoy pushing the envelope, especially when it comes to gardening. My good friend Lucy of Sweets, Savories Etc. gifted me with Black Beauty Zucchini Squash seeds. I placed them in a plastic baggie wrapped in a damp coffee filter, as soon as they sprouted I set them outdoors in their pots with a mini greenhouse over top. The greenhouses are made from recycled pop bottles, as long as it stays in the 40's at night I have left the top off. The pots are in a full southern exposure, if it gets too cool at night (frost) I will bring them inside for the night. As you can see, so far they are enjoying their new home ... 'grow baby grow'! If all goes as planned I should have zucchini by early June.

Soon the fruits of your labor will be yielding and yielding, YEA!

A pop bottle greenhouse! What a grand idea! I need to thin my seedlings. Gardening is anticipation - it also has taught me patience over the years! (Although I can't want to see the entire plant)

Theresa I am looking forward to homegrown zucchini.

Lucy .. LOL, wonder if my landlord would notice a greenhouse on the roof? My little recycled bottles are working, I am happy :)

Claudia .. anticipation is what it is all about isn't it?

Sue .. Oh yeah, I am looking forward to my expanded experimental garden.

anticipation is great...except when your garden fails. then the excitement of growing your own veggies disappears pretty quickly. :)

LOL Grace .. bite your tongue, "failure is not an option"

Thanks Balisha :)

Yep Racquel, they are performing just as I anticipated :)

Jean ... I will grate and store (freezer) any extras for zucchini bread later in the year.

Marie .. with the containers I can plant earlier, and bring them inside in case of frost (like tonite) :)

How exciting to watch those seeds push big green leaves through the dirt. Hope you get a wonderful harvest!

How fun! You have more patience than I, for sure.

Horray for the pop bottle idea. My seedlings will not harden over and I am afraid to plant them as even one rain drop would kill them but the bottles are brilliant. Thanks for sharing! Now I have alot of pop to drink up!

Thanks Lynn, and thanks for stopping by :)

Lol Lori, I have the patience to grow from seed so that I can have an early harvest :)

Robin .. good luck with the bottles, I hope to put my other seedlings out this weekend .. "undercover".

I really like this idea a lot and wish I would have found your blog before I decided to convert my raised beds into mini greenhouses with plastic and pvc. Grrr...oh well.

Only squash I have going in this year is a bush butternut squash.

Hi Jeff

Well it came to me that a recycled pop bottle would create the perfect atmosphere for seedlings, and I am happy it worked so well. Oh I would love to try bush butternut, I will have to go on a search for this.

Thanks for stopping by.... :)

What a fantastic idea with the pop bottles! I wish I had heard of this idea a month ago. You can bet that I will be using pop bottle green houses next April.
